Ecclestone: "Racisme groter opgeblazen dan het werkelijk is"

Formule 1-baas Bernie Ecclestone gelooft dat de recente racistische uitlatingen aan het adres van Lewis Hamilton erger worden afgeschilderd dan ze werkelijk zijn. Nadat de donkere McLaren-coureur eerder dit jaar tijdens een test in Barcelona al werd uitgejouwd door Spaanse fans, kwamen er voorafgaand aan de Braziliaanse Grand Prix opnieuw racistische berichten de wereld in via een Spaanse website. Ecclestone maakt zich echter niet druk. Volgens mij is het allemaal onzin, verklaart hij tegenover de Britse Radio 5.

Af en toe waren boegeroep en vervelende spreekkoren te horen vanaf de tribunes in Sao Paolo. Ecclestone: Ik denk echter niet dat dit iets met racisme te maken heeft. In Spanje waren de toeschouwers voor Fernando Alonso, in Brazilië steunen de fans massaal Felipe Massa. Dat is niet meer dan normaal. Mensen lezen deze berichten en geloven vervolgens dat er problemen zijn die helemaal niet bestaan. Die kleine incidentjes zijn meestal niet meer dan een grap. Fans mogen hun favoriete coureur steunen, daar is niks mis mee.

De hoogste baas van de Formule 1 was zeer tevreden met het zinderende slotstuk in Brazilië. Volgens de Brit is zijn landgenoot Hamilton de terechte winnaar van de titel. Tijdens de race gingen allerlei emoties door me heen. De manier waarop Lewis vorig jaar de titel misliep, dat vond ik verschrikkelijk. Door fouten van het team ging de titel uiteindelijk toch niet naar Hamilton. En dit jaar mislukte het voor Felipe. Helaas kunnen ze niet allebei winnen.
