Gerhard Berger is niet langer mede-eigenaar van het team van Scuderia Toro Rosso. Energiedrankenfabrikant Red Bull kocht het aandeel van vijftig procent van de oud Formule 1-coureur terug. Oorzaak is de ontwikkeling op gebied van regels voor klantenautos, die zijn vanaf 2010 verboden en dan moet Toro Rosso op eigen benen staan.

Reden voor Red Bull om van het team af te willen en met alle aandelen in handen is een verkoop makkelijker te regelen, zo is de verwachting. Berger tegenover het Oostenrijkse persbureau APA over de situatie: De regels voor klantenteams maken het voor Toro Rosso moeilijk om de huidige vooruitgang vast te houden. Red Bull steunt het team niet dusdanig dat progressie reëel is. En kans op succes was voor mij een voorwaarde om bij het team betrokken te blijven.

Een gedeeld project voor honderd procent financieren door één partner is volgens mij alleen maar mogelijk in de beginfase van een project. Die fase is nu voorbij. Dat is waarom Red Bull alle aandelen weer in handen heeft genomen.
