Dennis: "Ik geloof niet in plannen van Donington Park"

Donington Park kreeg gisteren toestemming voor een grootschalige verbouwing om de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië te kunnen huisvesten. McLaren-teambaas Ron Dennis is echter sceptisch over het ambitieuze plan. De Engelsman is wantrouwig over de financiering voor het project en vreest voor de toekomst van de Formule 1-race in zijn thuisland.

Ron Dennis zei op de Autosport International Show: Ik juich iedereen toe die een Grand Prix wil organiseren en voor competitie zorgt. Maar ik heb serieuze moeite om de financiering van Donington Park te begrijpen. De wisselkoers van de pond ten opzichte van de dollar is ongunstig en het contract zal op dollars gebaseerd zijn.

Bovendien is een significante investering in de infrastructuur nodig. Ik snap niet hoe al die mensen volgend jaar naar en van het circuit af moeten komen. Ik kan wel verklappen dat ik met de helikopter ga. De realiteit is dat ik hoop op succesvolle Grands Prix, maar dat zie ik met dit economische model niet gebeuren. Dat kan tot het verlies van de Grand Prix voor Groot-Brittannië leiden.

Dennis pleit voor betrokkenheid van de Britse overheid: Overheden moeten beseffen dat Grands Prix alle hulp goed kunnen gebruiken. Niks bijdragen is fundamenteel verkeerd. Dus overheden overal ter wereld, niet alleen de Britse, zouden steun moeten geven aan de Grands Prix. En de landen krijgen genoeg voor die races terug, wat betrokkenheid zou rechtvaardigen.

Wallonië is financieel niet echt een dragende kracht om de F1 te ontvangen, maar toch willen teams en coureurs daar graag rijden. Dus staat hij weer op de kalender, misschien kunnen ze voor andere circuits ook iets doen.Maar de grote vinger in de pap blijft Bernie
