Renault vreest onveilig KERS en baalt van kosten

Het team van Renault is geen fan van het dit jaar toegestane KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). Het nieuwe systeem zorgt alleen maar voor meer kosten en zou ook nog eens onveilig zijn. Tijdens een test in Jerez vorig jaar werd een monteur van BMW Sauber al geveld door een elektrische schok en Bob Bell, technisch directeur van Renault, vreest meer incidenten.

Wij hebben zeker zorgen over de veiligheid, dit is onbekend terrein voor ons. Ik denk dat we dit jaar enkele ongelukken zullen zien. Dat is onvermijdelijk. En soms zullen engineers ernstige schokken krijgen, laten we hopen dat het daar bij blijft. Hetzelfde geldt voor de marshalls. De sport doet er alles aan om het risico te beperken, maar er is altijd risico. Het gaat om een paar honderd volt, in potentie tientallen ampères en het kan dodelijk zijn, aldus Bell.

Renault-teambaas Flavio Briatore ergert zich meer aan de investeringen die hij heeft moeten doen. Ik vind KERS een verschrikkelijke vergissing. Renault, Mercedes, Ferrari en Toyota leveren andere teams motoren, maar daar maken we geen winst op. We doen het voor de sport. We moeten flink besparen op de motoren, maar de geldsluizen worden op een ander gebied wijd open gezet. Ik weet nog niet om hoeveel geld het gaat, maar duidelijk is dat we het niet onder controle hebben. En wat levert het ons op? Niets meer dan extra kosten.

Renault levert KERS ook aan Red Bull, niet? Noem me sceptisch, maar ik geloof helemaal niet dat Renault geen cent van de ontwikkelingskosten van Kers en motor doorrekent aan RB. Zeker heeft Renault liefde voor de sport, maar ze blijven wel een bedrijf natuurlijk!
Ik ben het wel met de Italiaan eens dat KERS niet echt het meest briljante idee was in tijden van kostenbesparing.

een paar honderd volt, ik heb al tienduizend volt door mij gehad en ik leef nog.
Het zijn de ampères die dodelijk zijn.
