Ecclestone wil Portugal weer op Formule 1-kalender zetten

Het Algarve Motor Park nabij Portimao kan vanaf 2010 een Grand Prix toegewezen krijgen. Dat meldt GrandPrix.com, opgemaakt uit bronnen dicht bij Bernie Ecclestone. De commerciële baas van de Formule 1 zou Portugal graag weer op de Formule 1-kalender zetten.

Het Algarve Motor Park biedt hem een uitstekende alternatief voor de races in Frankrijk, Groot-Brittannië en Duitsland. Frankrijk hoopt vanaf 2011 weer een Grand Prix te kunnen organiseren, de hoop van Groot-Brittannië is gevestigd op Donington Park en in Duitsland kan de Hockenheimring de kosten niet meer dekken.

Ecclestone weet dat de teams eisen om de helft van het totaal aantal Grands Prix in Europa te verrijden en zijn oog is daarom gevallen op de Algarve. Het nieuwe circuit heeft al twee tests gehuisvest en kan op de goedkeuring van teams en rijders rekenen. Ecclestone was van plan om tijdens de afgelopen testsessie zelf een kijkje te nemen, maar het slechte weer gooide roet in het eten. Zijn mensen controleerden daarom voor hem de faciliteiten en de omgeving.
