Stewart: "Formule 1 kan niet zonder Britse Grand Prix"

Een Formule 1-kalender zonder Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië is ondenkbaar. Dat zegt drievoudig wereldkampioen Jackie Stewart. Donington Park moet de Britse race vanaf 2010 huisvesten, maar het circuit kampt met veel problemen bij de vereiste renovatie.

Stewart verklaarde tegenover BBC Northampton: Het zou heel slecht zijn als de Britse Grand Prix verdwijnt. Ik hoop dat Donington Park slaagt, maar mocht dat niet lukken, dan hoop ik dat ze Silverstone vragen om de race te organiseren.

Bernie Ecclestone is zelf een Brit, en een trotse Brit bovendien. Ik denk niet dat hij zit te wachten op het verdwijnen van de Britse Grand Prix. Dat zou heel negatief voor hem uitpakken. Ik heb niets tegen Donington Park, maar ik wil gewoon zekerheid over de Britse Grand Prix. Die bestaat al sinds 1950. Het is de oudste Grand Prix ter wereld en het zou verschrikkelijk zijn als dat verloren gaat.
