Mallya staat samenwerking Mercedes en Honda-team toe

Force India-baas Vijah Mallya moest toestemming geven aan Mercedes om ook aan het Honda-team, mocht dat blijven bestaan, motoren te leveren in 2009. De reglementen schrijven namelijk voor dat een leverancier aan maximaal twee teams krachtbronnen aan mag bieden, tenzij de andere klanten en de internationale autosportbond FIA instemmen met meer cliënten.

Mallya had dus een overeenkomst in de weg kunnen staan, maar de Indiase zakenman is de beroerdste niet. De FIA-regels stellen dat een motorleverancier maar twee teams mag voorzien. In het geval van Mercedes zijn dat McLaren en Force India. Een eenjarige dispensatie is verleend om ook motoren aan het Honda-team te verstrekken. Ik had dat tegen kunnen gaan, maar ik heb gekozen om dat niet te doen omdat het niet goed zou zijn voor de Formule 1. Niemand wil een team zien verdwijnen. We verloren vorig jaar al Super Aguri en het zou niet goed zijn voor de sport als we nog een renstal kwijtraken.
