Heikki Kovalainen zet zinnen op wereldtitel voor 2009

McLaren-coureur Heikki Kovalainen heeft zich een jaar aan kunnen passen aan zijn nieuwe werkomgeving, nu wordt het tijd om te presteren. De Fin is zich bewust van de noodzaak voor successen, hij gaat het seizoen 2009 in met de wens om mee te doen voor de titel.

Kovalainen: Het is nog vroeg om er iets over te zeggen, maar ik hoop wel mee te strijden voor het kampioenschap. Als Formule 1-coureur moet je elk seizoen ook ingaan met het geloof dat het mogelijk is, anders heeft het geen nut om in die auto te stappen.

En ik geloof absoluut dat ik komend seizoen kans ga maken op de wereldtitel. Ik heb vorig jaar enorm veel geleerd en ben gegroeid als persoon en als coureur. Als de auto goed is, dan kan ik races winnen. En dat kan automatisch leiden tot titelkansen.

In 2008 begon ik ook met een goed gevoel, maar terugkijkend heeft het me toch langer gekost om volledig te wennen aan het team. Ook legde ik mezelf te veel druk op als het niet liep zoals ik wilde. Nu laat ik dat sneller los, ik wil genieten wanneer ik race.
