VT3: Rosberg opnieuw snelste tijdens training

Het lijkt een bekende uitslag te worden voor Nico Rosberg. De Duitser is voor de vijfde keer dit seizoen de coureur die de vrije training als snelst af weet te sluiten. Jarno Trulli eindigde de derde vrije training als tweede met Lewis Hamilton op de derde positie.

De derde en laatste vrije training voor de Grand Prix van China begon slecht voor Rosberg. De Williams-coureur eindigde zijn installatieronde in dezelfde grindbak waar Lewis Hamilton in 2007 het wereldkampioenschap verloor. De marshalls konden de auto er snel uithalen, en na 20 minuten verloren tijd kon Rosberg zijn sessie hervatten.

Gedurende de sessie werd het circuit langzaam aan sneller. Fernando Alonso wilde direct de snelheid van zijn Renault met de nieuwe diffuser tonen. Deze bleek vooralsnog op orde te zijn. Toch kent de Spanjaard ook problemen met de nieuwe diffuser. Na zes ronden moest de Renault in de pitbox blijven en werd de gehele achterkant van de wagen uit elkaar gehaald.

Renault heeft tevens besloten, net als Robert Kubica, om het KERS-systeem uit haar auto te halen en hier niet meer mee te gaan rijden. Hierdoor zijn alleen de McLaren-coureurs en Nick Heidfeld de over gebleven coureurs die met KERS rijden.

Naast Alonso kennen ook beide coureurs van Toyota en Red Bull Racing problemen. Bij Toyota klagen de coureurs over een vreemd geluid bij het op- en terugschakelen van de versnellingsbak. Dit resulteerde voor Timo Glock in slechts 6 ronden waarna ook zijn wagen uit elkaar werd gehaald en de sessie erop zat voor de Duitser. Mogelijk moet zijn versnellingsbak vervangen worden.

Red Bull Racing houdt uit voorzorg haar wagens aan de kant, zo vertelde teambaas Horner. Het team constateerde slijtage aan de achter aandrijfas waardoor Webber en Vettel ook slechts enkele ronden konden rijden.

De top tien wordt volbracht door Button op plaats vier met Piquet achter zich. Massa bezet de zesde positie gevolgd door Kovalainen, Nakajima, Raikkonen en Barrichello. De eerste veertien coureurs zaten binnen 7 tienden van elkaar.
