IRL: Castroneves wint voor derde keer Indy 500, Doornbos valt uit

Helio Castroneves heeft voor de derde keer de Indy 500 op zijn naam geschreven. De Penske Racing-coureur startte de race al vanaf pole position en was gedurende de 200 ronden niet uit de top weg te slaan. Dan Wheldon eindigde als tweede, Danica Patrick legde beslag op de derde plaats.

Robert Doornbos haalde het einde van de race niet. De Newman/Haas/Lanigan-rijder toucheerde licht de muur en verboog daarbij een deel van de achterwielophanging. Dat kon zijn team repareren, waardoor hij nog wat rondjes kon rijden, maar toen volgde een ander probleem. Remvloeistof lekte uit zijn achterremmen.

Doornbos: Ik was onder de indruk van het hele gebeuren toen ik op de grid stond. Toen de race onderweg was ging het volgens plan in de eerste stint, we hadden al acht plekken goed gemaakt. Jammer van de overenthousiaste inhaalactie van Tomas Scheckter. Daardoor kwam ik op het vuile gedeelte en kon ik de auto net niet uit de muur houden. Uiteindelijk lekte er na het herstel van de oorspronkelijke schade ook nog vloeistof uit de remmen, wat het einde van mijn race betekende. Dat was teleurstellend.

Doornbos was niet de enige die de finish niet haalde. IRL-veteraan Tony Kanaan maakte nog een flinke klapper, maar de hardste crash kwam op naam van Vitor Meira en Raphael Matos. De twee haakten in elkaar en knalden vol in de muur, waarna de auto van Meira nog een tijdje op zijn kant langs de muur doorschoof. De Braziliaan hield aan het ongeluk twee gebroken ruggenwervels over. Matos bleef ongedeerd.

Leuke race om te kijken, had alleen nog wel iets spectaculairder gemogen. Jammer voor Bobby

Sorry WH, maar hoe spectaculair zou je het dan wel niet willen hebben? Diverse crashes, waaronder die van Kanaan en natuurlijk Meira met Matos, een pitbrand, veel actie op de baan, een dame die vooraan haar partijtje meeblaast en als derde weet te finishen... Zomaar een paar highlights. Ik vond het top!

  Ja hoor, dat waren ook wel hoogtepunten die je noemt. Alleen het inhalen gebeurde meer in de pits, dat had van mij wel wat meer op de baan zelf mogen gebeuren.
