Coulthard verlangt terug naar kalender met traditionele circuits

David Coulthard heeft niets met de huidige generatie circuits waarmee de Formule 1-kalender ingevuld is. Banen als Sjanghai, Bahrein, Singapore en Valencia voegen volgens hem weinig tot niets toe aan de sport. Het merendeel van de huidige locaties was twintig jaar geleden nog geen gastheer van een Grand Prix.

Coulthard vertelde aan de BBC: De nieuwe banen zijn lang niet zo interessant als de historische circuits. De enige uitzondering wat dat betreft is Istanbul Park, wat wel een uitdaging is om op te rijden. Mensen gingen na Singepoare vorig jaar uit hun dak. Een interessante plek om naartoe te gaan, maar rijden onder kunstlicht is eigenlijk niet zo speciaal.

Het is zonde dat sommige prachtige circuits van de kalender zijn geschrapt. Imola was bijvoorbeeld een geweldige baan. Tragedie hebben we daar ook meegemaakt toen Roland Ratzenberger en Ayrton Senna om het leven kwamen. Maar dat doet niets af aan de schoonheid van dat circuit in dat golvende landschap.
