Twee weken na de Grand Prix van België gaat het Formule 1-seizoen 2009 verder met de laatste Europese race van dit jaar. Op het historische circuit van Monza wordt zondag de Grand Prix van Italië verreden. Jenson Button voert nog altijd de stand om het kampioenschap aan. De Brawn GP-rijder heeft zestien punten voorsprong op teamgenoot Rubens Barrichello.

Het circuit
Het Autodromo Nazionale di Monza is 5,793 kilometer lang en telt slechts elf bochten, waarvan zeven naar rechts. De coureurs moeten zondag in de race 53 ronden volbrengen. De kwalificatie en de race beginnen om 14.00 uur. De uitzendingen van RTL GP starten zaterdag en zondag om respectievelijk 13.55 uur en 13.00 uur.

Het Autodromo Nazionale di Monza is een uniek circuit op de kalender. Het is de snelste baan van de kalender. Eigenlijk is het één lang recht stuk, onderbroken door vijf bochten of series van bochten. De Variante del Rettifilo, de Variante della Roggia, de twee Lesmos, de Variante Ascari en de Parabolica zijn de enige punten waarop de rijders de rem moeten gebruiken. Alle teams rijden daarom met speciale lage downforce pakketten, om een zo hoog mogelijke topsnelheid te bereiken.

De kanshebbers
Het is dit jaar elke race gissen hoe de verhoudingen komen te liggen. Brawn GP en Red Bull Racing zijn de min of meer constante partijen en gaan onderling uitmaken naar wie de titels dit jaar gaan. Die twee teams doen op Monza waarschijnlijk ook mee voor de topklasseringen.

Welke teams zich daar in Italië bij voegen is de vraag. McLaren was sterk in Hongarije en Valencia, twee langzame circuits die enorm verschillen van Monza. De Britse renstal beschikt wel over KERS wat op de snelle baan een voordeel op kan leveren.

Ferrari, de winnaar van de vorige race, heeft dat systeem ook, maar zette de ontwikkeling aan de F60 al stil. Renault beleeft een moeizaam seizoen en grijpt voor Monza terug op KERS in de hoop op succes. En het is afwachten of Force India de goede vorm door kan trekken.

Forza Italia
De Italiaanse fans kunnen eindelijk weer Italiaan in een Ferrari op Monza begroeten. Niet Luca Badoer, maar Giancarlo Fisichella valt die eer ten deel. De routinier is opgepikt bij Force India en mag zijn Formule 1-loopbaan afsluiten bij zijn droomteam.

Zijn opvolger bij Force India is eveneens een Italiaan. Vitantonio Liuzzi keert na een afwezigheid van anderhalf jaar terug op de grid. De tifosi kunnen verder nog Jarno Trulli en Scuderia Toro Rosso aanmoedigen.

Het weer
Vorig jaar werd het weekend op Monza geteisterd door regenbuien. Scuderia Toro Rosso en Sebastian Vettel wonnen daardoor hun allereerste Grand Prix. De kans op herhaling van die weersomstandigheden is klein. Alleen voor zondag voorspellen sommige verwachtingen wat regen in de namiddag. De temperatuur ligt het hele weekend rond de 24 graden.
