FOTA bedroefd door afscheid Toyota van Formule 1

De Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) vindt het zeer spijtig dat de Formule 1 met Toyota een derde autofabrikant in minder dan twaalf maanden tijd verliest. Het verbond is van mening dat de Formule 1 alles in het werk moet stellen om de overgebleven autofabrikanten Mercedes, Renault en Ferrari te behouden.

In een verklaring melden de verenigde teams: De FOTA nam extreem bedroefd kennis van het onverwachte besluit van Toyota om de Formule 1 te verlaten. Alle teams hebben iedereen bij Toyota het beste voor de toekomst gewenst en ze bedankt voor hun positieve bijdrage aan de Formule 1 in de afgelopen jaren.

Spijtig genoeg creëerde de financiële druk in de auto-industrie omstandigheden waardoor Toyota het onverantwoord vond om door te gaan met de Formule 1, ondanks het tekenen van een verdrag dat ze tot en met 2012 aan de sport verbond. We hopen oprecht dat Toyota in de nabije toekomst terugkeert, maar ondertussen dient de leiding van de Formule 1 er alles aan te doen om van 2010 het succesvolle seizoen waar we allemaal op hopen te maken.

De inspanningen horen te liggen bij het vol houden van de grid voor 2010, hoewel we nog steeds de meeste deelnemende teams sinds 1995 hebben, en de concentratie op technologische innovatie en competitief racen. Het vertrek van een belangrijke autofabrikant mag niet onderschat worden en de oorzaken moeten we aanpakken.

En Renault is de volgende lijkt me. Ik denk dat het een goede ontwikkeling is dat de Grote automerken hun geldverspilling stopzetten en dat het racebloed weer terugkeerd in de vorm van prive-teams. Er zijn in het het verleden zo veel goede privateers geweest. Onder andere Tyrrell, Brabham, McLaren, Benetton en Jordan hebben succes gehad. Vergeet niet dat Ferrari ook origineel een prive-team is en ze straatauto\'s gingen maken om de F1 te betalen. Tel daar dan nog de huidige privateers Williams (ook vroeger al), Brawn en Red Bull bij op en ik denk dat je niet anders kan concluderen dan dat het kloppende hart van de F1 ligt bij de privateers en niet bij bijv. Jaguar, Renault, Toyota of BMW.
