Bahrein hoopt op slecht weer bij Europese voorbereidingstests

Bij het Bahrain International Circuit hopen ze dat de winter zich in februari in Spanje van zijn slechtste kant laat zien. Als tijdens de vier voorbereidingstests in Valencia, Jerez en Barcelona door slecht weer weinig gereden kan worden, dan komt Bahrein mogelijk nog in aanmerking voor een testsessie. Circuitbaas Martin Whitaker in Gulf Daily News: We zijn in gesprek met de teams en veel renstallen zouden maar wat graag testen in Bahrein.

Hij vervolgt: Testen buiten Europa is nu verboden als onderdeel van een pakket kostenbesparende maatregelen. Maar als teams hierheen willen komen en ze krijgen daar toestemming voor van hun concurrenten, dan heten wij ze van harte welkom. Op dit moment is het nog te vroeg om er iets over te zeggen, de meeste teams hebben de nieuwe auto nog niet eens af. Maar wij hebben vertrouwen dat één, misschien twee deelnemers voor het seizoen naar Bahrein komen voor een test.

Gemiddeld gezien halen de teams het meest uit een testdag in Bahrein. Van onze 38 voorgaande testdagen gingen er slechts twee verloren door slechte omstandigheden. Het is hier mogelijk om vanaf half acht tot half zes te testen met een constante lucht- en baantemperatuur. In Europa proberen ze om elf uur nog de kou van het asfalt te halen en bovendien regent het vaak in de winter. Toegegeven, de reis is wat langer en duurder, maar de optimale omstandigheden maken dat meer dan goed.

Ik vind het een beetje onzin om per se in de EU te gaan testen, als je ook banen hebt waar de omstandigheden veel beter zijn. Of waar de kans op slechte weersomstandigheden veel minder is...
