Volkswagen overweegt Formule 1 pas bij ander imago en lage kosten

Volkswagen is voorlopig niet van plan om toe te treden tot de Formule 1. Voordat de Duitse autofabrikant het überhaupt gaat overwegen moet er nog het nodige veranderen aan de koningsklasse van de autosport. Die boodschap droeg Volkswagen-motorsportdirecteur Kris Nissen aan Autosport uit.

De Formule 1 staat voor de moeilijkste situatie in jaren. Daar moeten ze op inspelen en ik geloof echt dat de FIA met Jean Todt en de teams dat ook zullen doen. Om autofabrikanten terug te halen en nieuwe autofabrikanten te lokken zijn stabiliteit, een ander imago en lagere kosten nodig. Dit is al vaak genoeg gezegd, men weet het al lang, maar nu zijn de juiste mensen er mee bezig, aldus Nissen.

Hij liet ook weten dat in het geval van toetreding van de Volkswagen Group, het waarschijnlijk een van de andere merknamen dan Volkswagen zal gebruiken. De Volkswagen Group bestaat uit tien merken en als ze besluiten om in te stappen, dan dienen ze voor een bepaald merk te kiezen. Persoonlijk denk ik niet dat de keuze op Volkswagen zal vallen. Mocht het tot toetreding komen, dan is het de Volkswagen Group die de stap waagt.
