Barrichello: "Ik schrik soms van mijn eigen enthousiasme"

Na één dag testen heeft Rubens Barrichello al iets gevoeld dat voor verbetering vatbaar is. De Williams FW32 heeft te veel last van onderstuur. Barrichello: "We kampen met een balansprobleem, door de smallere voorbanden neigt onze wagen te veel naar onderstuur."

Voor de rest had de Braziliaan genoten van zijn debuut in de Williams. "Het voelde als een eerste dag op een nieuwe school. Dat spannende gevoel en veel nieuwe mensen leren kennen. Ik vond het een leuke dag. Wat de Cosworth-motor betreft was het een aardige eerste dag. We liepen tegen een klein probleem met het gas aan, vandaar dat ik stil viel. Voor de rest hebben we nog niet het uiterste van het materiaal gevraagd."

"Minder leuk vind ik het vooruitzicht dat we dit jaar races met iets van 160 kilo aan brandstof moeten beginnen door het tankverbod. Daarmee ben je al gauw vier seconden langzamer dan wat mogelijk is en als coureur wil je te alle tijden zo snel als mogelijk."

"Men denkt dan dat Michael Schumacher en ik in het voordeel zijn omdat we dat al eens eerder hebben ervaren, maar de auto's van nu zijn niet te vergelijken met die van toen. De hedendaagse wagens zijn veel meer afhankelijk van de aerodynamica en het is zaak om strak de ideale lijn te volgen. Vroeger kon je daar meer van afwijken."

Vroeger is voor Barrichello al een hele lange tijd geleden. Hij begint dit jaar aan zijn achttiende Formule 1-seizoen. "En ik weet nog niet wanneer ik stop. Ik schrik soms van mijn eigen enthousiasme en zoals ik me nu voel wil ik dit nog jaren doen."
