Het nieuwe Formule 1-seizoen vangt zondag 16 maart aan met de Grand Prix van Australië in Melbourne. De klas van 2014 bevat met Kevin Magnussen, Daniil Kvyat en Marcus Ericsson drie debutanten. In de aanloop naar de eerste race stelt F1Today.net de nieuwelingen in de Formule 1 aan jullie voor. Vandaag deel 1 met Kevin Magnussen.

Kevin Magnussen zag op 5 oktober 1992 het levenslicht in Roskilde, Denemarken. Het race-gen werd hem met de paplepel ingegoten, want zijn vader is niemand anders dan Jan Magnussen. Een naam die bij de oudere Formule 1-volger een belletje doet rinkelen. Jan Magnussen stond te boek als een groot talent, maar dat kwam er op het hoogste niveau nooit uit.

Kevin Magnussen wordt ook veel potentie toegedicht. Dat is makkelijk te herleiden. De jonge Deen stormde door de lagere klassen. In zijn eerste jaar in de autosport in 2008 won hij meteen met overmacht het Deens Formule Ford-kampioenschap. Het jaar daarna sloot hij af als runner-up in het Noord-Europees kampioenschap Formule Renault 2.0.

Daarna waagde hij de sprong naar de Formule 3. Na een jaar wennen in Duitsland en de EuroSeries zette Magnussen in 2011 de aanval in op de felbegeerde Britse titel. Opnieuw eindigde hij als tweede, achter Felipe Nasr. Voor 2012 stapte hij over naar de World Series by Renault en daarin veroverde hij in 2013 zijn eerste titel sinds het Formule Ford-kampioenschap in Denemarken.

Toen behoorde Magnussen echter al jaren tot het opleidingsprogramma van McLaren. De Britse renstal pikte de Deen in 2009 op. Zijn eerste Formule 1-ervaring deed hij in 2012 op in Abu Dhabi tijdens de young driver-test. Hij is de eerste zelfopgeleide rookie bij McLaren sinds Lewis Hamilton in 2007 voor de equipe uit Woking debuteerde.

Magnussen heeft dus grote schoenen te vullen. Niet alleen die van Hamilton, maar ook die van zijn vader. Of beter gezegd, hij moet de fouten die Jan Magnussen beging zien te vermijden. Kevin Magnussen maakt tot nu toe een evenwichtige indruk. Zijn vader behoedt hem voor de valkuilen van de Formule 1. Met een beetje geluk verloopt zijn entree net zo sensationeel als die van Hamilton.

Qua snelheid zal hij volgens mij niet moeten onderdoen voor Button. Maar het is niet alleen de snelheid die telt. Debuteren bij McLaren lijkt een godsgeschenk maar bij een minder seizoen kan hij al gauw verbrand zijn. Benieuwd, ik gun het hem wel.

Heb een goed voorgevoel over hem. Bovendien zou ik het McLaren erg gunnen om weer bovenaan te staan. Kijken of hij Button de baas is.
