Force India spiegelt opleiding aan die van McLaren

Het team van Force India kijkt bij het opzetten van een eigen opleidingsprogramma veel naar McLaren. Dat onthulde adjunct-teambaas Bob Fernley in gesprek met Autosport. Force India lanceerde reeds een talentenjacht in India en kondigde vorige maand de samenwerking met GP2-renstal Hilmer Motorsport aan. Het team heeft voor jonge talenten een soortgelijk traject voor ogen als McLaren met Lewis Hamilton en Kevin Magnussen deed.

Fernley: "We moeten het zelf nog begrijpen, onze opleiding staat nog in de kinderschoenen. Het doorschuiven van reservecoureurs naar een racestoeltje was vrij makkelijk, omdat je dan aardig weet of ze klaar zijn voor zo'n stap. Vanuit de GP3 of GP2 is dat lastiger te beoordelen, maar we besteden veel aandacht aan het analyseren van jonge talenten. We hebben een programma ontwikkeld wat vrij geraffineerd is en waarmee we beloftevolle rijders al vroeg in kaart brengen, te vergelijken met hoe McLaren dat doet. We hebben ons eigen systeem ontworpen, dus daarin zijn we al ver gevorderd. Het is als proces ondergeschikt aan onze prestaties, maar het is wel belangrijk. Nico Hulkenberg zal ons een keer verlaten en dan moeten wij zijn opvolger klaar hebben staan."
