Teams en coureurs gedenken passagiers vlucht MH370

Alle teams en coureurs rijden dit weekend met een boodschap op hun auto of helm voor de families en nabestaanden van de passagiers van vlucht MH370. Het vliegtuig van Malaysia Airlines raakte een paar weken geleden vermist, maar deze week trokken de autoriteiten de conclusie dat het toestel in zee is gestort. Geen van de 239 inzittenden zou dat hebben overleefd.

Deze kwestie hield Maleisië en ook de rest van de wereld aardig bezig de afgelopen weken. De Formule 1 kan dat niet onopgemerkt aan zich voorbij laten gaan. De teams en coureurs gedenken de passagiers met boodschappen als 'Pray for MH370' op de bolides en helmen. De paddock neemt zondag een minuut stilte in acht in nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers.

Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton: "Het is een verschrikkelijke tragedie. Het enige dat je kan doen is bidden." McLaren-collega Jenson Button voegt toe: "Het is goed dat de hele paddock hierbij stil staat middels eerbetuigingen. Het is afschuwelijk nieuws. Ik leef echt met de families mee. We doen wat we kunnen, maar het zal een moeilijk weekend worden voor de Maleisische bevolking."

De organisatie heeft in ieder geval een concert van Christina Aguilera geannuleerd. De overige activiteiten zullen dit weekend een ingetogen karakter krijgen.
