Rob Smedley in Bahrein aan de pitmuur namens Williams

Rob Smedley is begonnen met zijn werkzaamheden voor het team van Williams. De Brit is afkomstig van Ferrari en zal bij de Britse renstal de functie van head of vehicle performance bekleden. In die hoedanigheid zit Smedley komend weekend in Bahrein al aan de pitmuur namens Williams.

Engineer Rod Nelson schetst de situatie: "Rob gaat naar de races en ik werk vanuit de fabriek en doe de tests. Ik zal ook de Grands Prix voorafgaande aan de testsessies tijdens het seizoen bijwonen zodat ik de kennis over het betreffende circuit mee kan nemen naar de test. Rob en ik zullen veel interactie hebben tijdens de raceweekenden. Hij runt de pitmuur en ik run controlekamer vanuit de fabriek."

"In racen is communicatie van levensbelang. Je hebt een goede verbinding met de fabriek nodig om snel te anticiperen op ontwikkelingen. Als je op vrijdag op een probleem stuit, is het zaak om op vrijdag ook een oplossing te verzinnen. Maar die open lijnen zijn soms nog wel eens lastig."
