Kapotte remschijf dwingt Van der Garde tot 'a hell of a save'

Giedo van der Garde heeft een enerverende vrije training achter de rug in Barcelona. De test- en reservecoureur van Sauber kwam vrijdag tijdens de ochtendsessie in de problemen toen bij het naderen van bocht 1 op circuit de Catalunya zijn remmen dienst weigerden. De Nederlander wist ternauwernood zijn bolide uit de bandenstapels te houden, hetgeen hem na afloop de nodige complimenten opleverde.

Van der Garde: "Het was inderdaad 'a hell of a save'. Je schrikt ook wel even. Je komt aanrijden met een snelheid van zo'n 320 kilometer per uur, je remt en er gebeurt niets. Vervolgens reageer je instinctief en probeer je wat. Daarmee heb ik de auto kunnen redden. Gelukkig kon ik ook nog terugkomen naar de pits."

Daar werd vervolgens geconstateerd dat een kapotte remschijf de oorzaak van het probleem was. Na reparatie kon Van der Garde zijn sessie vervolgen. "In de eerste ronde was ik nog even iets voorzichtiger. Dan denk je: ik rem iets eerder om te kijken of alles het weer doet. Maar alles was prima en daarna pak je de draad gewoon weer op."

In totaal legde de Nederlander in de auto van de Mexicaan Esteban Gutiérrez onder zonnige omstandigheden 21 ronden af. Met zijn snelste tijd van 1:30.440 belandde hij op de achttiende plek. De Duitser Adrian Sutil kwam in de andere Sauber tot 1:29.688 (vijftiende). De snelste tijd (1:27.023) werd in de eerste vrije training genoteerd door Lewis Hamilton, de Brit van Mercedes die de laatste drie GP's wist te winnen.

Van der Garde toonde zich na afloop van de eerste vrijdagtraining niet helemaal tevreden over het verloop. "Deze sessie was niet echt goed. Ik had veel last van overstuur. Hopelijk kunnen ze snel iets vinden."

  Jij denkt dus dat als het chassis lichter is dan de vorige dat je automatisch al sneller moet zijn. Ik denk toch echt dat je de auto eerst weer opnieuw moet afstellen voordat je sneller zal gaan. Gutierrez is ook bijna een seconde langzamer in de tweede vrije training dan Sutil. Dus op dit moment nog niet het juiste effect. Er is ook niet mee getest op het circuit, dus we gaan zien waar het de Saubers dit weekend gaat brengen.

je weet ook helemaal niet op welke strategie hij zat. Of wel;k onderdeel hij moest testen ofzo.

Vrije trainingen zeggen helemaal niks. Als de informatie van VDG maar goed is aan het team!
Dus MILLI azijnzeikerd doe niet meteen zo negatief. Want volgens mij als dit max verstappen was geweest of Frijns dan was het wel prima of dan had je gezegd..... jaa ligt aan wat hij precies moet testen.
