Toekomst van Grand Prix van Canada nog altijd ongewis

De onderhandelingen tussen de organisatie van de Canadese Grand Prix, Bernie Ecclestone en de lokale autoriteiten hebben nog niet in concrete nieuwe afspraken geresulteerd. De partijen praten over een nieuw tienjarig contract voor de race in Montreal, maar bereikten nog geen akkoord.

Een woordvoerder van Dominique Vien, de nieuwe minister van Toerisme in Quebec, liet weten dat er geen aanleiding voor angst of paniek is. "De onderhandelingen verlopen soepel. De nieuwe plaatselijke regering heeft daar niets aan veranderd. We zullen iets aankondigen zodra iedereen er klaar voor is", verklaarde de voorlichter tegenover La Presse.

Soortgelijke teksten komen bij Denis Coderre, burgemeester van Montreal, vandaan. "Ik ben erop gebrand om deze kwestie voor de komende tien jaar op te lossen. Het vordert gestaag. Na verloop van tijd zullen we aankondigingen maken. Maar we zijn nog steeds in discussie en op dat vlak boeken we progressie. Het vergt gewoon wat tijd."

Ecclestone zou verbeteringen aan het verouderde circuit en de gedateerde faciliteiten eisen, alsmede een verplichte jaarlijkse indexatie van vier procent voor de fee van de race. Promotor Francois Dumontier: "De onderhandelingen zijn gaande en hopelijk kunnen we binnenkort goed nieuws presenteren."

Ik hoop dat ze eruit komen. De GP van Canada valt bij mij in het zelfde rijtje 'must have' circuits als Monaco.
