Red Bull Racing licht optie in contract van Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo is zeker van een langer verblijf bij Red Bull Racing. De Oostenrijkse renstal heeft de optie in het contract van de Australiër gelicht, bericht Sport Bild. Ricciardo bewees zich in zijn eerste maanden als coureur van Red Bull Racing als topcoureur.

Hij won in Canada zijn eerste Grand Prix. Ricciardo strijkt volgens Financial Review een jaarsalaris van 3,65 miljoen dollar op bij Red Bull Racing, exclusief bonussen. Voor een overwinning staat een bedrag van tussen de 1 en 2 miljoen dollar. Het was dus een lucratief weekend voor hem in Montreal.

Red Bull Racing heeft nu het plan opgevat om Ricciardo tot en met 2018 aan Sebastian Vettel te koppelen. De vraag is of Vettel ook zo lang wil blijven. De viervoudig kampioen wordt regelmatig in verband gebracht met Ferrari en Adrian Newey doet een stapje terug.

Al is dat laatste geen factor in de beslissing van Vettel, beweert teambaas Christian Horner. "Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat Sebastian nog jaren voor ons rijdt. Hij praat nooit over zijn contractuele situatie, maar hij heeft veel successen met ons gevierd en hij heeft het hier naar zijn zin."
