Whiting: "Sotsji is een circuit dat de coureurs zal bevallen"

De Formule 1 bereidt zich voor op de Grand Prix van Duitsland, de tiende ontmoeting in het seizoen 2014, maar in Rusland is het vizier al gericht op 12 oktober. Dan vindt in Sotsji de eerste Russische Grand Prix plaats. En het parkoers dat door het Olympisch dorp slingert zal de rijders bekoren.

Dat denkt Charlie Whiting, wedstrijdleider bij de internationale autosportbond FIA. "Sotsji is een circuit van hoog niveau. Alles wordt heel fijn afgewerkt. Het is een snel circuit en een baan met twee, drie goede inhaalmogelijkheden. Ik vind het een heel interessant circuit en ik verwacht een spectaculaire race in oktober."

"Het ziet er veel beter uit dan de vorige keer dat ik de locatie bezocht. Toen was het nog een bouwput. Dat is inmiddels een jaar geleden en nu zie je de contouren van een prachtig circuit. De baan zelf is zeer snel en zal de coureurs bevallen, daar ben ik van overtuigd."

"Over de veiligheid kunnen we niet anders dan lovend zijn. Het is van wereldklasse. We hebben allerlei simulaties uitgevoerd om de uitloopstroken en bandenstapels in te richten. Het Sotsji Autodrom is qua veiligheid het neusje van de zalm. Het wordt een spektakelstuk, daar ben ik zeker van."
