Mexicaanse Grand Prix mogelijk seizoensfinale in 2015

De Grand Prix van Mexico keert volgend jaar na 23 jaar afwezigheid terug op de Formule 1-kalender. En wellicht krijgt het evenement meteen de eer om het seizoen af te mogen sluiten. De seizoensfinale vindt in 2015 mogelijk plaats in Mexico City.

Dat verkondigde Jose Abed, vice-president bij de FIA en de Mexicaanse afvaardiging in de internationale autosportbond, op radiozender Grupo Formula. "Misschien is de seizoensfinale volgend jaar voor Mexico, met dubbele punten."

Een datum aan het einde van de jaargang lijkt logisch. Dan is Mexico namelijk logistiek makkelijk te combineren met bijvoorbeeld de Grand Prix van de VS in Austin. Bovendien hebben ze tijd nodig om het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez te renoveren.

Bij de verbouwing gaat de Peraltada-bocht waarschijnlijk verloren. Abed legt uit: "Ten eerste is de kombocht voor het rechte stuk van start en finish te gevaarlijk. De tweede reden is dat we ruimte moeten creëren voor 40.000 extra zitplaatsen."
