'Motoren zijn niet allesbepalend in de Formule 1'

Paddy Lowe van Mercedes wuift de suggestie dat het dit jaar alleen maar om de motoren draait in de Formule 1 resoluut van de hand. Zijn renstal won negen van de elf Grands Prix in 2014 en beschikt over de beste aandrijflijn. Maar niet alleen de krachtbron is sterk, de rest van het pakket is ook niet misselijk. De motoren zijn niet allesbepalend, luidt de boodschap.

Lowe vertelde aan Autosport: "Bij deze auto's gaat het om de performance van het geheel der systemen, niet om losse elementen. Het gaat erom dat het totaalplaatje klopt. Het is de motor, de efficiëntie van de aandrijflijn, de aerodynamica en hoe dat alles in elkaar past. Het is de collectieve efficiëntie van de motor, aero en wielophanging, evenals het gewicht. Onze auto is heel snel. Er zijn meer teams met onze aandrijflijn, maar die zijn minder snel, dus het is meer dan de motor."

Otmar Szafnauer van Force India voegde toe: "Om te winnen moet je alles beheersen. Neem bijvoorbeeld Mercedes, hun auto zou ook goed zijn met een Ferrari-motor of een Renault V6. Draait het in de Formule 1 om de motoren? Misschien wel meer dan de afgelopen jaren. Maar zijn de motoren allesbepalend in de Formule 1? Nee, dat niet."
