Jos Verstappen trots na verdienstelijk debuut Max

Zowel Scuderia Toro Rosso-teambaas Franz Tost als vader Jos Verstappen is uitermate tevreden met de eerste officiële vrije training van Max. De 17-jarige Nederlander heeft met de twaalfde plaats in de eerste sessie in Japan bevestigd wat de ingewijden al wisten en daarnaast zichzelf op de kaart gezet bij de rest van de Formule 1-wereld en ver daarbuiten.

"Suzuka is een moeilijk circuit om onder de knie te krijgen. Juist daarom hebben wij Max hier de kans gegeven om te leren. Max heeft het heel goed gedaan", aldus Tost. "Hij heeft 22 ronden kunnen rijden en de baan leren kennen. Zodoende kan hij volgend jaar als hij hier voor Scuderia Toro Rosso komt racen vanaf de eerste meters snel zijn. Net zoals nu in Japan, zal Max dit jaar ook nog in de VS, Brazilië en Abu Dhabi de eerste vrije training rijden om zich voor te bereiden op 2015. Ïn Rusland is hij niet aanwezig, omdat hij dan een Formule 3-race op Imola heeft.

Jos kon zijn kalmte maar moeilijk bewaren, vertelt hij aan www.verstappen.nl. "Toen ik Max de eerste keer de pitbox uit zag rijden en de eerste ronden zag maken, was ik nerveus. Hij zit voor de eerste keer in de STR9 en nog wel op een moeilijk circuit, vooral de eerste sector. Maar Max heeft het heel snel opgepakt. Iedereen heeft gezien dat hij sterk heeft gepresteerd, helemaal top. Het belangrijkste was dat Max bleef rijden, zoveel mogelijk. Hij heeft meer dan genoeg laten zien."

"Zelf zei Max dat hij sneller had kunnen zijn, maar hij wilde geen onnodig risico nemen", vervolgt Jos. "Iedereen binnen Toro Rosso is super positief en ontzettend tevreden. Dat is wat belangrijk is. Als je ziet hoe Max nu al met zo'n auto en alles daar omheen omgaat, lijkt het bijna vanzelfsprekend voor hem. Hij heeft het erg goed gedaan, ik ben blij voor hem en enorm trots."

Het lijkt nog maar zo kort geleden dat we Jos aanmoedigden vanaf de bank. We zijn getuige van een prachtig moment in de (Nederlandse) autosport :).
