Hamilton: "Ik heb nog zeven jaar Formule 1 in me"

Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton denkt tot minstens 2021 in de Formule 1 actief te blijven. De 29-jarige Brit won dit jaar zijn tweede wereldtitel en verzamelde nadien de ene na de andere onderscheiding. Het Britse volk riep hem bijvoorbeeld uit tot BBC Sport Personality of the Year. Naderhand vertelde hij nog lang niet klaar te zijn in de Formule 1.

Hamilton deelde aan BBC Sport mede: "Ik heb nog wel zeven jaar Formule 1 in me. Dat is in elk geval mijn doel, om nog minstens zeven jaar op dit niveau te racen. In 2008 veroverde ik mijn eerste titel en dit seizoen heb ik dat aantal verdubbeld. Vanaf nu is alles mogelijk, the sky is the limit. Ik moet wel blijven pushen en doorgaan met mezelf tot het uiterste dwingen."

"Ik had deze award echt totaal niet verwacht. Ik had in geen miljoen jaar gedacht mijn naam terug te zien tussen alle groten der aarde die deze prijs eerder in de wacht hebben gesleept. Ik bewaar geen enkele trofee thuis, die staan allemaal bij mijn vader, maar voor deze maak ik een uitzondering. Ik ben twee keer als tweede geëindigd, maar toen was ik jonger en onderging ik het allemaal maar. Nu kan ik er veel meer waardering voor opbrengen."
