Bahrein twijfelt aan levensvatbaarheid Grand Prix van Qatar

De directeur van het Bahrein International Circuit is er niet van overtuigd dat de mogelijke toevoeging van Qatar aan de Formule 1-kalender wel een goed plan is. Volgens Sheik Salman bin Isa Al-Khalifa wordt een derde race in het Midden-Oosten, naast Bahrein en Abu Dhabi, te veel van het goede.

"De populariteit van de Formule 1 is de afgelopen tien jaar flink gegroeid en dat proces is nog altijd bezig", vertelde Sheik Salman bin Isa Al-Khalifa. "We waren blij dat we in 2009 Abu Dhabi konden verwelkomen als race in de Formule 1 en hebben ook altijd gezegd dat er geen concurrentiestrijd bestaat tussen de twee circuits."

"Wij hebben onze race aan het begin van het seizoen en Abu Dhabi is achteraan op de kalender geplaatst. Daarnaast zijn wij meer gefocust op de Gulf regio (GCC) en heeft Abu Dhabi een meer internationaal gezicht. Er is dus voldoende plaats voor beide evenementen op de kalender."

"Ik weet echter niet zeker of dit gebied klaar is om nog een race te organiseren. Voorlopig is het natuurlijk alleen maar speculeren en is het geweldig dat de sport hier in de regio aan populariteit blijft winnen."

    Ik blijf het vreemd vinden dat er races in die regio worden gehouden. Nieuwe tijden en kansen, snap ik ook wel. Maar fans? Misschien rijke oliemensen maar of daar veel Jan met de pet fans zijn betwijfel ik. Liever meer races hier of Zuid Amerika, daar is meer passie en beleving, zeker weten!

      over grote deel wat ik op de tribune in Abu Dhabi ervaar was expats expats expats....en met best veel passie (veel Britten).

    Abu dhabi is echt een zeer mooi circuit. En ook leuke wedstrijden gezien. Heb er zelf ook gewerkt en kan beamen dat de sfeer daar echt tip top in orde is tijdens een f1 weekend. Quatar zijn de motogp wedstrijden echter meesterlijk. Of de f1 daar hetzelfde kan hangt af van de layout. Zoals die er nu bij ligt lijkt me dat lastig. Het recht stuk is de enige plek zowat.

    Levensvatbaar?

    Een sport waar de gemiddelde fan voor een plastic tribunestoeltje de prijs moet betalen waar je een luxe luie stoel van kan kopen, en dus genoodzaakt is om races te gaan kijken op TV... Achter een decoder... Om te zien men in een woestijn mega tribunes hebben staan waar niemand op zit, omdat men daar uberhaupt weinig interesse en racetraditie hebben.... Maar een rijke Sjeik het zo leuk vindt om die stofzuiger-aangedreven auto's met klapvleugeltjes in zijn achtertuin te zien....

    Dat is inderdaad niet zo levensvatbaar nee...
