Wereldkampioen Hamilton blijft startnummer 44 trouw

Lewis Hamilton is niet van plan om zijn persoonlijke startnummer 44 in te ruilen voor startnummer 1. Omdat de Brit vorig jaar de wereldtitel veroverde, mag hij dit seizoen met nummer 1 op zijn auto rijden. Hamilton wil hier echter niets van weten.

"Iedereen die de wereldtitel wint, kan nummer 1 gebruiken, maar dat is irrelevant voor mij", vertelt Hamilton tegenover Reuters. "44 betekent meer voor me dan nummer 1. Dat wil niet zeggen dat ik niet nummer 1 ben."

"44 is het nummer van mijn familie. Ik had nummer 44 toen ik begon met racen en ik won mijn eerste kartkampioenschap met dat nummer. Het betekent iets voor me. Sebastian Vettel heeft nummer 1 gehad en Michael Schumacher ook, net als alle kampioenen. Geen van hen had 44. Dat nummer is van mij."
