Maldonado: "Achterstand op Williams niet groot"

Het team van Lotus behoort tot het groepje dat achter Mercedes om de resterende punten gaat strijden. Die inschatting maakt coureur Pastor Maldonado. Lotus heeft, mede dankzij de komst van Mercedes als motorenleverancier, een reuzenstap gezet deze winter. Maldonado durft weer hardop te dromen. Zelfs Williams is niet uit het zicht verdwenen.

Althans, dat denkt Maldonado. "Om de auto beter te maken dan die van Mercedes hebben we een wonder nodig. We verwachten niet op dat niveau te opereren. Om het gat te verkleinen is al veel meer geld en mankracht vereist. Mercedes beschikt over meer middelen en is van een andere orde. Wij moeten onszelf andere doelstellingen opleggen."

"Achter Mercedes vormt zich een compact groepje. Williams is daarvan volgens mij het sterkst, maar onze achterstand is niet groot. Dan heb je Red Bull Racing, Ferrari, wij en misschien Force India, aangezien zij op de eerste dagen met hun nieuwe auto gelijk een goede indruk achter lieten. Het is interessant. Ons pakket is aanzienlijk verbeterd ten opzichte van vorig jaar."

Hahaha en dan bewust ook Williams benoemen. De achterstand op Williams is meer dan een seconde. Laat Lotus nu maar eerst stabiel punten scoren en dan verder kijken. Het budget en het team van Williams zijn duidelijk een maatje groter dan wat Lotus is. De motor heeft ze zeker voorruit geholpen maar ik vind de achterstand op Williams en Mercedes GP nog erg groot. Dan hebben we het nog niet over de schuldenlast en de leegloop van sponsors gehad bij Lotus.
