Optie in nieuw contract Melbourne voor nog 5 jaar

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Australië in Melbourne verzekerde zich recent tot en met 2020 van de Formule 1-race op Albert Park. In het nieuwe contract is bovendien een optie voor vijf extra jaren opgenomen, laten betrokkenen weten.

Promotor Ron Walker bijvoorbeeld, maar ook Daniel Andrews, premier van de staat Victoria. Hij zegt in de Herald Sun: "De kans is aanzienlijk dat we na 2020 nog vijf jaar doorgaan met de Grand Prix." Melbourne is sinds 1996 gastheer voor de Formule 1.

De berichten dat Sydney pogingen onderneemt om Melbourne na 2020 af te lossen als locatie voor de race, met een stratencircuit over de beroemde Harbour Bridge, vallen dan ook niet goed. "Het is zeker verkiezingstijd in New South Wales", sneert John Eren, parlementslid in Victoria, op ABC.
