McLaren-Honda rust MP4-30 uit met een S-duct

De McLaren-Honda MP4-30 bevatte op de donderdag in Maleisië een S-duct in de neus. Force India en Red Bull Racing pionierden eerder met dat concept. Het systeem vangt onder de neus lucht op en via een S-constructie in de neus wordt die lucht naar boven gedirigeerd en bovenop de neus weer los gelaten. In Australië reed McLaren nog zonder S-duct.

Of het de Britse renstal veel zal helpen is nog maar de vraag. Coureur Jenson Button is terughoudend. "Ik denk dat we een flinke vooruitgang in performance boeken, maar ik weet niet of het genoeg is om uit de achterhoede te ontsnappen en met de andere teams te racen", vertelde de wereldkampioen van 2009 aan Sky Sports F1.

"Onze achterstand was in Melbourne aanzienlijk, dus zelfs als we een grote stap zetten staan we nog steeds achteraan. Hopelijk wel een stuk dichter bij de overige teams. Het is zaak om elke race dit soort sprongen voorwaarts te maken. De temperatuur maakt het extra lastig. Oververhitting van de aandrijflijn was in het voorseizoen een probleem voor ons. We zullen zien hoe het hier gaat."

    Mooi gedaan, tegelijkertijd vraag ik me af of zoiets als dit uberhaupt winst in performance oplevert. In het geval van ja, ben ik benieuwd hoeveel. Ik vind de gedachte erachter en de werking te simpel om te denken dat dit veel voordeel oplevert. Het is namelijk niet iets radicaals. Dit was bij iedereen al bekend. Maar ook al zou het maar een heel klein beetje voordeel geven. Alle kleine beetje helpen. Daar gaat het uiteindelijk om en daar komt het uiteindelijk ook op aan in de Formule 1. Alle kleine beetjes samen maken een goede wagen.

      Voor de ene wagen zal het meer uitmaken dan voor de andere. Misschien helpt het Honda-McLaren niet zozeer om tijdwinst te boeken, maar wel om van de problemen af te komen die zij tot nu toe hebben gehad. (Ik betwijfel het, maar in theorie is dat een mogelijkheid). Of ze daarmee ook aansluiting vinden met Mercedes of welk ander team dan ook, is een tweede.

    Ik meen dat Ferrari hier juist ook al eerder wat mee gedaan heeft en er vrij snel afscheid van heeft genomen... Maargoed, misschien kregen zij het toen niet goed werkend en McLaren nu wel...?
