Villeneuve: "Mercedes liet de teugels wat vieren"

Dat Ferrari de aansluiting gevonden heeft bij Mercedes heeft de regerend wereldkampioen voor een groot deel aan zichzelf te danken. Dat stelt oud-coureur Jacques Villeneuve. Na alle successen van vorig seizoen is het bij Mercedes een beetje verslapt.

Villeneuve vertrouwde Auto Hebdo toe:

Het lijkt erop dat Mercedes na de dominantie van vorig jaar de teugels wat heeft laten vieren. Ik denk dat ze niet hadden gedacht dat iemand ze in één winter bij zou kunnen halen, ze realiseerden zich niet dat de situatie is veranderd.

De topvorm van Ferrari is echter niet alleen voor Mercedes een verrassing. Pirelli-motorsportbaas Paul Hembery zegt in Turun Sanomat:

Het heeft elke expert verbaasd. Na de wintertests en Australië kon je dit niet vermoeden. Na Maleisië beseft Mercedes dat ze harder moeten werken.

    Hoe weet deze vent dat nou weer? Misschien heeft Mercedes wel hard gewerkt maar viel er minder progressie te boeken, want ze lagen al voor op de rest.
