Stefan GP sprak met twaalf coureurs over racecontract

Stefan GP had lange tijd kans om het dertiende team te worden in de Formule 1. Het team kwam op de reservelijst van de FIA te staan, maar op het moment dat US F1 ter ziele ging was het al te laat voor Stefan GP om in te stappen in de Formule 1. Desalniettemin praatte Zoran Stefanovic, oprichter van het team, met maar liefst twaalf verschillende coureurs voor een contract.

Lange tijd werden Jaques Villeneuve en Kazuki Nakajima als topkandidaten voor de twee racestoeltjes genoemd. Villeneuve had al een zitje bij het team gepast, terwijl Nakajima in beeld kwam doordat Stefan GP technology en auto's overkocht van Toyota, waar Nakajima ook onder contract stond. "Kazuki was klaar om dit jaar voor ons te schitteren en ik hoop dat hij snel een nieuwe kans krijgt zodat hij kan laten zien hoe goed hij écht is", vertelde Stefanovic.

Naast Villeneuve en Nakajima werd ook de naam van GP2-coureur Pastor Maldonado vaak genoemd. Net als Villeneuve had de Venezolaan al een stoeltje gepast in de fabriek van Toyota. Ten slotte behoorde Narain Karthikeyan ook tot de topkandidaten, zo vertelde Stefanovic: "Hij is extreem snel en tijdens zijn bezoek aan de fabriek toonde hij zijn intelligentie en zijn positieve instelling."

Naast deze vier coureurs behoorde ook de Belg Bertrand Baguette, nu IndyCar-coureur, tot de mogelijke coureurs voor Stefan GP, net als Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Karun Chandhok, Takuma Sato, Adrian Valles en Alexandros Margaritis. Verder voerde Stefan GP ook gesprekken met meervoudig WRC-kampioen Sébastien Loeb.

Stefanovic vertelde dat het nog altijd de ambitie heeft om in 2011 daadwerkelijk op de Formule 1-grid te staan.
