Philip Morris tot en met 2018 sponsor van Ferrari

Philip Morris International, het moederbedrijf van sigarettenmerk Marlboro, heeft de sponsorovereenkomst met Ferrari met drie jaar verlengd. De verbintenis liep na 2015 af, maar beide partijen hebben een akkoord over een contract tot en met 2018 bereikt.

Dat meldt Bloomberg. Tabaksreclame is eigenlijk al jaren verboden in de Formule 1, maar Marlboro heeft daar nog geen consequenties aan verbonden en blijft Ferrari onverminderd steunen. Volgens Sports Pro Magazine levert deze deal de Scuderia zo'n 160 miljoen dollar op.

@Kennie: Natuurlijk is dit een "subtiele" verwijzing. Maar Philip Morris heeft vrijwel alle reclameruimten gekocht op de auto. Voorvleugel, achtervleugel, engine cover en side pods.     Het blijft een rare constructie; Philip Morris dat geld neerlegt om sponsorruimte te kopen op de wagen en deze dan te verkopen aan andere sponsoren zoals Santander, UPS en Shell.

      Kijk eens goed naar het logo van de Scuderia, als je daar geen pakje Marlboro in ziet, zie je het inderdaad niet. Op de engine cover van de foto bij het artikel staat het, als je snel kijkt, of wanneer je alleen de linkerkant ziet, lijkt het al snel een Marlboro logo. Hebben ze slim gedaan daar.

      Deze constructie is al vanaf begin 2000 het geval waarbij Philip Morris de sponsorruimten destijds verkocht aan Vodafone. Vodafone kon hierdoor uiteindelijk nooit titelsponsor worden van Ferrari en hebben daarom hun heil gezocht bij McLaren.

      Was niet op de hoogte dat PM alle sponsorruimte had gekocht en doorverkoopt aan derden. Vind het op zich wel logisch dat Vodafone geen hoofdsponsor kon worden, aangezien het team van 1997 tot halverwege 2011 Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro heette. Shell is overigens een technische partner van het team, maar betaalt natuurlijk ook voor een sticker op de auto. Op zich kan je, als het waar is wat je zegt, gewoon stellen dat Ferrari de sponsoring dan aan PM heeft ge-outsourced. Best slim.
