Oud Formule 1-coureur Renzo Zorzi overleden

Renzo Zorzi is na een lang ziekbed op 68-jarige leeftijd overleden. De Italiaan verscheen tussen 1975 en 1977 zeven maal aan de start van een Grand Prix namens Williams en Shadow. Hij schreef in 1975 de Formule 3-race in Monaco op zijn naam, wat de deuren naar de Formule 1 opende.

De meeste bekendheid ontleent Zorzi echter aan een tragische gebeurtenis. In de Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix van 1977 op Kyalami viel hij op het rechte stuk stil met motorproblemen. De marshal die het circuit over wilde steken om hem te hulp te schieten werd aangereden door Tom Pryce. Zowel de baancommissaris als de coureur overleefde het voorval niet.

Dat was wel een bizar incident toen inderdaad, Pryce kan ik mij hierdoor wel herinneren maar dat Zorzi de oorzaak was was mij dan weer niet bekend. Vrij jong nog en spijtig dat het middels een lang ziekbed moet!
