Verwondingen Hinchcliffe waren levensbedreigend

James Hinchcliffe dankt zijn leven aan adequaat en snel handelen van het baanpersoneel op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway. De Canadees schoof maandag tijdens een van de trainingen voor de Indy 500 hard de muur in en daarbij liep hij levensbedreigende verwondingen op. De meeste schade werd aangericht door een deel van de wielophanging die het chassis binnen drong.

Het blad Racer vernam van meerdere bronnen dat een van de wishbones door zijn rechterbeen was geschoten en vervolgens zijn linkerbeen doorboorde voordat het onderdeel bij zijn bekken tot stilstand kwam. Hinchcliffe verloor veel bloed en daardoor was haast geboden voor het Holmatro Safety Team om hem zo snel mogelijk uit zijn benarde situatie te bevrijden. De artsen ter plekke verrichtten vervolgens goed werk om de bloedingen te stelpen.

Hinchliffe herstelt momenteel op de intensive care van een van de plaatselijke ziekenhuizen en maakt het naar omstandigheden goed. "Woorden kunnen niet beschrijven hoe dankbaar ik het Holmatro Safety Team ben. Zij zijn, samen met de artsen, regelrechte helden voor mij. Ik kan ook niet goed uitdrukken hoeveel waardering ik heb voor alle steunbetuigingen van fans, van mijn naasten en van andere coureurs. Het voelt alsof we even één grote familie zijn."
