Sainz: "Mentaal is het verschrikkelijk afzien in F1"

Scuderia Toro Rosso-coureur Carlos Sainz bestrijdt het beeld dat van de Formule 1 aan het ontstaan is dat het makkelijk is voor rookies om de koningsklasse van de autosport te betreden. De Spanjaard heeft ogenschijnlijk weinig moeite gehad om zich aan het hogere niveau aan te passen, maar schijn bedriegt. Het is heel zwaar, beweert Sainz.

"Fysiek is het misschien minder veeleisend dan tien jaar geleden, maar mentaal is de Formule 1 verschrikkelijk afzien", begint de Spanjaard. "Ik heb laatst de communicatie tussen het team en de rijder uit Spanje terug geluisterd om te kijken wat we beter kunnen doen en het is ongelooflijk. Mentaal is het een hele opgave om al die afstellingen continu in de gaten te houden en je tegelijk op het rijden en het sparen van de banden te concentreren."

"Voor elke bocht moet je schakelaars wat betreft de batterijen en de rembalans omzetten. Het is zwaar, alleen op een andere manier dan voorheen. Ik zou het graag versimpelen en de auto's sneller maken zodat ik me meer kan focussen op het rijden zelf en op de set-up. Men zegt dat het makkelijk is voor rookies om in te stappen. Zo lijkt het misschien, maar het is zeker niet waar."

    misschien is het op een andere manier veeleisender (gecompliceerder) dan voorheen, dat is niet wat de meesten willen zien, banden sparen en schakelaars omzetten, zal wel, de snelheden moeten omhoog, zeker de bochtensnelheden, het moet fysiek weer veel zwaarder worden.

Andere coureurs hebben dat minder en compenseren talent en kwaliteit met heeel hard werken en focussen. Volgens mij is Sainz ook zo iemand. Vandaar ook de jaren in andere klassen waar hij niet per definitie opviel vanwege zijn enorme resultaten. Laatste jaar WSR uiteraard niet meegerekend. Maar hij heeft in die jaren geleerd dat hij heel ver kan komen op inzet, wilskracht, hard werken en focussen. Dat is hij gaan doen en voila in 2014 en 2015 kwamen opeens de prestaties en bleek dat Sainz het in zich heeft om ver te komen. Maar Sainz is niet het type dat kan verslappen. Dan zie je dat direct. Vandaar dat je ook zulke prestaties ziet. Sainz scoort punten, maakt weinig fouten, doet geen gekke dingen maar blijft focus houden en verdiend zo het respect van eenieder. De keerzijde is dat je ook niet vaak uitzonderlijke dingen zal zien. Geen Senna-achtige races, Schumacheriaanse regenraces op slicks of Maximiliaanse toestanden ;) haha dat laatste was provocatie. :)
