Sauber: "Hinwil haar deuren zien sluiten was geen optie voor mij"

Peter Sauber heeft geen spijt van het terugkopen van zijn Formule 1-renstal van BMW. De Duitse autofabrikant nam eind 2005 het team over, maar trok zich na vorig seizoen terug. Toen het team ten dode leek opgeschreven greep Sauber in.

Aan het einde van november vorig jaar kon ik kiezen, begint Peter Sauber. Het team overnemen of de fabriek in Hinwil haar deuren zien sluiten. Dat laatste was geen optie voor mij. Het was duidelijk dat het niet makkelijk zou worden, maar ik zou het zo weer doen.

Toen ik het team kocht hadden we geen sponsors en geen plek op de grid. Ik stapte er volledig open in. De wagen was compleet wit. Ik had natuurlijk niet kunnen voorspellen dat de C29 zo ver verwijderd zou zijn van de top.

Het had naïef geweest om te denken dat we in korte tijd nog grote sponsors voor 2010 zouden aantrekken. Dat gezegd hebbende, we zijn financieel veilig voor dit seizoen. Onze speurtocht naar sponsors concentreert zich vooral op 2011, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat we niet proberen om dit jaar al geldschieters te strikken.
