Honda wil Ferrari en Williams opjagen in 2015

Honda introduceert dit weekend in Canada een verbeterde motor. De partner van McLaren heeft twee tokens verbruikt voor de verbrandingsmotor en de turbocharger, meldt Speed Week. Na een moeizame start van het seizoen durft Honda langzaam maar zeker naar boven te kijken.

Motorsportbaas Yasuhisa Arai: "Tijdens de wintertests zijn we op een boel onverwachte problemen gestuit en verloren we veel kostbare tijd omdat we niet reden. Maar nu is onze motor dusdanig verbeterd dat we bijna van een geheel nieuwe aandrijflijn kunnen spreken. Wij geloven dat we de rest van het seizoen regelmatig in de punten kunnen eindigen."

"In het ideale scenario zou vanaf de zomer het podium ons doel zijn. Iedereen denkt bij McLaren-Honda nog steeds aan 1988, toen we vijftien van de zestien races wonnen. Dat zet ons wel onder druk. Hoe dan ook, we willen in 2015 nog de aansluiting vinden bij Ferrari en Williams en voor de middellange termijn is onze doelstelling om Mercedes te achterhalen."

      In iedergeval een doelstellig en visie. Beter dan Renault dat zonder budget een eigen team wil omdat de huidige exposure met opgeblazen motoren te weinig oplevert..

      @Rimmer, ze doen er dan ook alles aan om in de picture te komen...ze schuwen het zelfs niet om de motoren op te blazen :)

    Aan ambitie geen gebrek, maar podiums dit seizoen? Daar durf ik niet op te hopen. Als ze vijfde eindigen bij de constructeurs met af en toe een top 6-klassering ben ik tevreden met dit seizoen voor McLaren-Honda. En dan volgend seizoen voor het podium gaan.

    Op lange termijn heb ik nog steeds veel vertrouwen in deze combinatie. Die titels gaan er wel komen.

    Eigenlijk begrijp ik er weinig van dat fabrikanten als Honda (en Renault) zich laten verleiden om als motorbouwer in de F1 actief te zijn. Het is zo onvoorstelbaar duur en complex geworden om een winnende motor te bouwen. Dat duurt vele vele jaren en honderden miljoenen euro's. In die tussentijd gooi je je reputatie te grabbel. Er komt maar weinig positieve exposure naar boven, zie de hoeveelheid kritiek die beide merken dit jaar over zich heen hebben gekregen. Als McLaren (of Red Bull) gaat winnen, dan staat vooral McLaren (of RedBull) primair in de picture als hét winnende team. Als ze echter verliezen, dan ligt het vooral aan de motorbouwer. Ik vraag me werkelijk af wat de echte beweegredenen voor dat soort fabrikanten zijn om mee te doen in de hedendaagse F1 (die qua bezoekers- en kijkersaantallen nou ook niet optimaal scoort). Is het toch de gewenste positieve exposure? Of is het toch het sportieve aspect? Of leren ze veel van de technische zaken wat ze vervolgens elders kunnen gebruiken? Ik ben erg benieuwd want de Return On Investment lijkt me dit jaar en de komende jaren minimaal en het is maar zeer twijfelachtig of ze over een paar jaar wél gaan winnen.

      Zou het kunnen dat de huidige bazen van Honda en Renault een jaar of 20, 30 waren toen in de jaren 80 en 90 hun merken overwinningen behaalden, dat ze nu in de 50 zijn, tot in de hoogste tak van de company ladder zijn geklommen, beslissingsbevoegd en hun jeugdherinneringen sterken zijn dan hun realistische kijk op het heden.

      Vaak zijn motieven in de jeugd terug te vinden en erg simpel van aard.

      Race on sunday sell on monday. Rent er iemand naar de showroom voor zo´n treurige megane als RedBull een puntje pakt? Nee alleen Ferrari verkoopt op maandag, haar merchandising.

      Technische fall out dan ? Aan de F1 meedoen omdat iemand zegt dat hybride de toekomst is en je Kers moet hebben? Lijkt me sterk.

      Ik kom uit op argument 1. Volstrekt irrationeel en afhankelijk of de baas toevallig racegek is.

    Ik vind die Árai altijd wel erg optimistisch. Maar op basis waarvan is hij zo optimistisch? De betrouwbaarheid is nog steeds een probleem en de punten die Button in Monaco scoorde, moeten niet overschat worden.

    Ik hoop echt van ganser harte dat die Honda motor flink aan pk's gewonnen heeft, maar ik heb er een hard hoofd in.

    Williams en Ferrari achter halen? No way, gaat niet gebeuren dit jaar. Laat McLaren-Honda maar eerst eens de komende grand prix punten halen.

    Dus zijn ze in zijn optiek al sneller dan RBR en STR. Moet ik eerst nog zien ondanks de Renault motor.

    Het feit is gewoon dat zij in ontwikkelen beter moeten kunnen zijn dan Lotus, Sauber en Force India en waarschijnlijk ook wel Toro Rosso. Dus ik geloof best dat ze aan het einde van het seizoen regelmatig in de punten kunnen eindigen. Maar podiums lijkt me toch wel even een stapje te ver want je verwacht dan ook dan andere teams gewoon stil blijven staan in ontwikkeling.

    Ik had na de wintertest en eerste races nooit verwacht dat ze nu zouden staan waar ze staan. Als ze dit weekend punten scoren zijn ze echt op de goede weg. Blijf wel wat betreft betrouwbaarheid mijn twijfels houden, meestal brengen updates weer andere problemen naar voren, maar mocht McLaren zowel "redelijk" snel zijn en met beide auto's halen de finish dan kan ik niets anders zeggen dan chapeau!
