Honda plant bouw van fabriek in Milton Keynes

Honda prepareert zich om de capaciteit voor de Formule 1 uit te breiden. Crash.net heeft interne documenten ingezien waaruit blijkt dat de Japanse motorleverancier van plan is om een nieuwe Formule 1-fabriek in Milton Keynes te bouwen. Honda heeft de intentie om meer teams van motoren te voorzien en heeft daar een geschikte werkplek voor nodig.

In de nieuwe faciliteit, gelegen achter het bestaande Mugen Technical Centre in Milton Keynes, kunnen 65 medewerkers van Honda terecht. De nadruk zal liggen op onderzoek en ontwikkeling, maar volgens Crash.net is het mogelijk dat uit dit personeelsbestand ook engineers voort kunnen komen die klantenteams zullen assisteren.

Een deel van de Honda-werknemers die in Milton Keynes gestationeerd worden zal zich bezig houden met de verbetering van de hybride systemen, momenteel een van de zwakke plekken bij de aandrijflijn van de Japanse autofabrikant. Motorsportbaas Yasuhisa Arai vindt het overdreven om van een nieuwe fabriek te spreken. "Het is slechts een magazijn. We hebben opslagruimte nodig voor onze hybride-systemen, die liggen nu nog opgeslagen in een container achter het Mugen-gebouw."

    Als zij een dusdanige investering doen, dan zit dat wel goed voor de komende jaren. Want een team kun je wel verkopen, zie 2008 bij Honda zelf. Maar een fabriek enkel voor de faciliteiten waar men een motor bouwt, dat is lastiger om uiteindelijk van de hand te doen. Goed om te lezen dus dat men plant op de (middel)lange termijn :)
