Michelin slaakt vreugdekreet bij bandenoorlog

Michelin heeft zich bij de internationale autosportbond FIA aangemeld voor de rol van bandenleverancier voor de Formule 1 in de periode 2017 tot en met 2019. De Franse bandenfabrikant zou het echter helemaal niet erg vinden om het op te nemen tegen Pirelli of een andere firma. Concurrentie is geen vereiste, maar wel welkom.

Pascal Couasnon van Michelin vertelde aan Motorsport.com: "We zouden het geweldig vinden. Als er een bandenoorlog komt, dan slaken wij een vreugdekreet. Het is misschien iets duurder dan met een enkele bandenleverancier, maar het zijn ook andere tijden dan in 2005 en 2006. Het aantal testdagen is gelimiteerd, alleen zo beperk je de kosten al."

"De teams spenderen tegenwoordig sowieso al veel tijd aan het doorgronden van de banden, om het rubber beter te benutten. Zouden ze dan meer geld uitgeven als er twee bandenleveranciers zijn? Ik denk het niet. In de sportscars nemen we het op tegen Dunlop. Daarin houden we de kosten ook in toom. Ik zie een beetje competitie wel zitten, dat moet ook in de Formule 1 mogelijk zijn."
