Button: "Mechanische grip goed voor het racen"

McLaren-coureur Jenson Button is een voorstander van een terugkeer van groundeffect in de Formule 1. De bazen van de sport bestuderen tal van maatregelen om de sport te verbeteren. Een van de opties is om de wagens weer afhankelijk te maken van groundeffect.

Op die manier produceren de bolides minder vuile lucht en is het makkelijker om voorliggers te volgen. Button constateert: "Het is goed om de vele goede nieuwe ideeën voor de toekomst te horen. Ik zou ze het liefst al volgend jaar in werking zien treden in plaats van in 2017 pas."

"Het idee van lichtere auto's bevalt me wel. De wagens worden dan nerveuzer, minder lui. Meer mechanische grip is altijd goed voor het racen en inhalen. Downforce van de bodemplaat is beter dan van de vleugels, omdat je dan minder vuile lucht hebt en dichter achter degene voor je kan rijden."

Heb nooit begrepen wat er nou gebeurt was met dat grondeffect verhaal. In de tijd dat de overtaking workgroup bezig was was toch al duidelijk dat dat weer terug moest komen?

Het enige wat ze toen overgenomen hebben is eigenlijk DRS en een jaartje wat bredere voorvleugels.

      een racewagen zonder achtervleugel is als een vrouw zonder borsten ;-)
      ik vind de vleugels altijd nog wel wat hebben, maakt de boel compleet, alleen zouden ze de achtervleugel weer normale afmetingen moeten geven ipv dat rare kleine dingetje dat er nu op zit.
      en de voorvleugel simpeler maken en normale afmetingen

    Hoe zou het "ground effect" nu toegepast worden? Ik dacht dat het verboden vanwege de veiligheid? Niet alleen om de bochtensnelheid maar vooral om de onvoorspelbaarheid? Eenmaal de aerodynamische grip kwijt en je kon het meestal vergeten meen ik gelezen te hebben.

      Precies Warlord, ik begrijp er ook niets meer van. Het lijkt wel of de mensen binnen de F1 van jaar tot jaar leven en lijden aan een ernstige vorm van dementie. Dit was DE wijziging in F1 die volledig was gebaseerd op het argument veiligheid. En precies zoals je aangeeft het is onvoorspelbaar, ground effect beetje kwijt is gelijk volledig kwijt. Button heeft kennelijk de laatste weken niet naar de filmpjes van de vliegend Indy auto's gekeken.

      Maar ja aan de andere kant heeft Tilke in al die jaren alle snelle bochten al omgetoverd naar krappe haakse bochten.

      Het probleem met het groundeffect van de jaren 80 waren de skirts. Wanneer deze over de curbstones gingen of om wat voor reden ook bovenin bleven hangen was de grip in 1x weg. Er zijn vele manieren zonder skirts om groundeffect te genereren. Kijk naar de group C auto's uit de jaren 90 met een diffuser waar je bijna naar binnen kon lopen. Als ze nu weer ground-effect toe gaan staan (wat eigenlijk nooit helemaal weg is geweest want de auto's hebben nog steed een kleine diffuser) zal dat gaan via het toetstaan van een grotere diffuser waardoor de onderkant van de auto meer downforce gaat genereren. De skirts zullen we om veiligheids reden nooit meer terug zien.

      Trouwens zoek maar even naar wat informatie van de huidige RWS auto daar hebben ze het ground effect al verhoogt om zo het close racen te verbeteren.

      @PETER: vliegende indycars heeft niets te maken met ground-effect. Puur het ontwerp van de aerodynamica is daar het probleem. De auto's krijgen een opwaartse luchtflow als ze dwars gaan als ze dan eenmaal los komen komt er lucht onder de grote platte bodemplaat en dan is het gedaan.

    De voorvleugels zijn inmiddels weer zo absurd complex dat die dingen al niet meer goed werken als iemand in de tribunes een scheet laat.

    Als ze die voorvleugel nou een stuk simpeler maken en inderdaa grond effect weer terug brengen dan zouden ze op een natuurlijke manier dichter op elkaar kunnen rijden.

      mee eens, hadden we het hier laatst nog over, het idee staat me wel aan dat op deze manier het inhalen word bevorderd, kunnen ze dat drs afschaffen en de vleugels verder versimpelen, ook dat de wagens nerveuzer worden is een mooie bijkomstigheid.
      als ik onboards zie van de 2015 wagens is het soms niet normaal hoe die dingen op rails lijken te lopen, je krijgt vanachter de tv echt de indruk dat je dit zelf ook wel zou kunnen

    Volgens mij maken de wagens in Gp2 ook gebruik van ground effect. Is volgens mij een van de redenen dat ondanks dat de wagens minder complex zijn toch soms zo dicht in de buurt komen van de ronde tijden in de F1.
