Gastaldi: "Rijders vrij om te zeggen wat ze willen"

Federico Gastaldi, vice-teambaas bij Lotus, beweert dat het huidige medialandschap er mede debet aan is dat de coureurs nog maar zelden het achterste van de tong laten zien in interviews. Pers hoort bij het vak, maar de rijders besteden er het liefst zo min mogelijk tijd aan. Oud-coureur Emerson Fittipaldi vergeleek de coureurs al met robots.

Gastaldi: "Ik begrijp wat Emerson zegt, maar als team ondernemen wij niets om te voorkomen dat rijders zeggen wat ze denken. De coureurs zijn vrij om te zeggen wat ze willen, maar het zijn andere tijden dan toen Emerson nog actief was. Als je tegenwoordig iets zegt dat ook maar een klein beetje afwijkt van het geijkte pad, dan wordt dat tot in den treure herhaald, geanalyseerd en uit zijn verband getrokken door alle verschillende vormen van media."

"Veel rijders springen verstandig met die vrijheid om. Hoe minder controversiële dingen je zegt, hoe minder tijd je kwijt bent aan de pers. Dat is waarom coureurs veelal vluchten in politieke antwoorden als ze te veel vragen krijgen. Ze willen rijden en racen, niet uren discussiëren over de vraag of Kim Kardashian op de voorpagina van het blad Rolling Stone moet staan."
