Regenbandentest gepland op Paul Ricard in 2016

De Formule 1 keert in 2016 terug naar het circuit van Paul Ricard in Frankrijk. Niet om te racen, maar voor een tweedaagse testsessie met regenbanden. De test staat gepland op 25 en 26 januari 2016. Alle huidige teams zijn uitgenodigd en er zal gereden worden met de bolides van dit seizoen. Initiatiefnemer van de test is Pirelli, dat al langere tijd bezig is om te kijken naar mogelijkheden voor het beter kunnen testen van de regenbanden.

In het verleden werden delen van testdagen gebruikt voor het testen van regenbanden, de laatste jaren werd dit niet meer gedaan. Er is gekozen voor Paul Ricard vanwege de moderne faciliteiten die er zijn voor regentests. Net als bij andere bandentests mogen er geen wijzigen aan de wagens worden gedaan en ook geen nieuwe onderdelen worden getest.

Motorsportbaas Paul Hembery van Pirelli over de testsessie: "Het idee is om naar Paul Ricard te gaan in januari volgend jaar. Het is een voorwaarde om naar een baan te gaan waar we invloed hebben op de hoeveelheid water dat we op de baan kunnen sproeien. Bovendien is het een van de weinige plaatsen in Europa waar het weer warm genoeg is in die periode van het jaar om te testen. We nodigen alle teams uit om deel te nemen en het zou fijn wanneer ze onze uitnodiging accepteren zodat we zoveel mogelijk data kunnen verzamelen".

Pirelli wil de test gaan gebruiken voor het testen van nieuwe regenbanden voor het seizoen 2016. De test komt vroeg genoeg om die banden klaar te hebben voor het nieuwe seizoen. Voor Pirelli is de latere seizoensstart in 2016 wat dat betreft gunstig, na de test op Paul Ricard zijn er nog ruim twee maanden te gaan voor het nieuwe seizoen begint.

Los van de regentest hoopt Pirelli ook meer mogelijkheden te krijgen voor het testen met droogweerbanden: "Iedere test is gunstig voor ons. We willen echt meer kunnen testen om de banden beter te kunnen ontwikkelen en de show voor de fans mooier te maken. We zijn afgelopen winter te conservatief geweest. Onze opdracht was om banden te maken waarmee twee of drie stops per race gemaakt moesten worden, nu is het vaak maar een stop die de rijders nodig hebben", aldus Hembery.
