Honda geeft onderschatting van F1-project toe

Honda heeft de uitdagingen die gepaard gingen met een comeback in de Formule 1 onderschat. Dat bekende motorsportbaas Yasuhisa Arai. Het eerste half jaar terug in de koningsklasse van de autosport verliep met vallen en opstaan, vooralsnog meer vallen dan opstaan. Maar Honda en McLaren zijn vastberaden om het tij te keren.

Arai: "De verwachtingen liepen hoog op door onze illustere geschiedenis als partner van McLaren. De gloriedagen eind jaren tachtig en begin jaren negentig staan bij veel fans in het geheugen gegrift. Zij dachten vast dat we gelijk competitief zouden zijn, wat ons niet is gelukt. De Formule 1 is ingrijpend veranderd sinds die bloeiperiode. De huidige technologie is veel meer verfijnd en het is lastiger om een goede auto te produceren."

"We wisten dat het niet makkelijk zou zijn, maar we hadden ons niet voor kunnen stellen dat het zo moeilijk zou zijn. Ik wist niet welke uitdagingen ons op gebied van techniek te wachten zouden staan, maar ik heb het volste vertrouwen in de richting die we met onze aandrijflijn zijn ingeslagen. We moesten iets radicaals doen om de andere motorleveranciers af te troeven. Daarom zijn we hier, om de beste te verslaan."

    Daarom is de F1 qua motortechniek (oh nee: power unit...) ook veel te complex (en te duur) geworden. KERS, MGU-H, MGU-K, verbrandingsdeel.... als zelfs een wereldconcern als Honda er amper iets fatsoenlijks van kan maken, dan ben je doorgeslagen als sport. Snap dat je niet terug kunt in deze tijd naar dikke V10 of V12 motoren maar gewoon een simpele kleine V6 met 2 turbo's erop en dikke uitlaat, dat zou al voldoen.

      Ik ben bijna 20jaar vrij intensief f1 fan. Met bijzondere intresse voor de techniek, maar zaken als powerunit mgu-h en mgu-k blijven bij mij gewoon niet hangen...

      De mensen die dat vroeger deden vonden het ook maar niets dat mensen gingen racen met koetsen waar een 1 cylinder 7pk motor in lag.

    Bij hun afscheid uit de f1 verlieten ze door de achterdeur toch ook al met hun Japanse staartje tussen de benen het toneel. Toen was de techniek aanzienlijk conventioneler. Ook Toyota droop af onder conventionele omstandigheden. Kopiëren en doorontwikkeling hebben onze vrienden uitstekend onder de knie, maar creëren is different shit.

      Voorbeeld: Japanse bedrijven kopieerde na oorlog allerlei Europese camera's, om daarna zelf met eigen ontworpen topcamera's van Nikon, Olympus en Canon op de proppen te komen.

    @Kevin. Het patentburo in Japan past in een bezemkast. Creativiteit beperkt zich eigenlijk tot de Japanse keuken. Het wordt veelal verklaard uit de strakke cultureel en maatschappelijke discipline. Ik zou zeggen, ga dr eens kijken. Misschien kun je dr ook eens iets over lezen. Lees bijvoorbeeld eens hoe ASML Nikon en Canon van de kaart veegde, toen ze een chip-machine uitvonden die werkte met een lithografisch proces, of waarom Nissan bij Renault aanklopte toen ze geen diesel konden produceren die aan de europese criteria voldeet. Doorontwikkeling / perfectioneren lukt ze wel, maar beginnen van scratch gaan ze rondjes lopen. Helaas zal dus dit f1 avontuurtje opnieuw in schoonheid sterven, beste Kevin
