Williams: "F1 allang geen mannenbolwerk meer"

Het merendeel van de in de Formule 1 werkzame mensen is nog altijd van het mannelijke geslacht, maar er is een kentering waarneembaar. Dat verkondigt Claire Williams, vice-teambaas van Williams, in Der Tagesspiegel. "De Formule 1 is heel anders dan het tien of zelfs vijf jaar geleden was. 38 procent van het publiek is vrouw, het is allang geen mannenwereldje meer."

Ze vervolgt: "Er zijn tegenwoordig veel invloedrijke vrouwen werkzaam in de autosport. We hebben monteurs, engineers, aerodynamicaspecialist. Acht procent van onze engineers is vrouw. Dat klinkt misschien als niet heel veel, maar vier jaar geleden was dat nog nul procent. We zijn er nog lang niet, maar er is wel verbetering zichtbaar. De Formule 1 is geen mannenbolwerk meer."

Claire Williams is overigens niet van mening dat het fenomeen 'grid girls' niet langer getolereerd dient te worden. "Grid girls maken onderdeel uit van een lange traditie in de autosport. Ik geloof niet dat het noodzakelijk is om dat af te schaffen. Waarom zou dat een gedateerd beeld van vrouwen weergeven? Niemand dwingt ze om het te doen, is het wel?"
