Williams zegt sorry tegen Bottas voor pitblunder

Het team van Williams kruipt diep door het stof na een blunder tijdens de Belgische Grand Prix. De Britse renstal vergooide de kansen op een mooi resultaat met Valtteri Bottas door bij een van diens pitstops één harde band en drie zachte banden te monteren. Dat is niet toegestaan en dus ontving de Fin een straf, waardoor een potentiële top vijf-klassering in rook op ging.

Hoofdengineer Rob Smedley verontschuldigt zich. "Als team hebben we een grote fout gemaakt en namens iedereen zeg ik sorry tegen Valtteri dat we hem een mogelijke podiumplek door de neus geboord hebben. We gaan een grondig onderzoek uitvoeren om te bepalen waar het in de procedure mis is gelopen en treffen aan de hand daarvan maatregelen om herhaling te voorkomen."

Bottas eindigde uiteindelijk als negende. "De pitstop en de racesnelheid zijn twee aspecten die we nader moeten bestuderen. We dachten dat we sterker voor de dag zouden komen in de wedstrijd, maar op de zachte band in de eerste stint konden we het tempo niet volgen en daardoor belandden we in een lastige positie. Het is zaak om in Monza sterk terug te slaan", aldus de Fin.
