Broer van Justin Wilson neemt award in ontvangst

Justin Wilson is door het IndyCar-publiek uitgeroepen tot Fan Favourite dit jaar. De Brit zelf maakte dat helaas niet meer mee. Hij overleed vorige maand aan de verwondingen die hij opliep tijdens de race op Pocono. Zijn broer Stefan Wilson nam de award bij het IndyCar Gala in ontvangst en hield deze toespraak.

"Bedankt aan alle fans en collega's die op Justin gestemd hebben. De steunbetuigingen en gebaren in de afgelopen week zijn overweldigend geweest. Niets kan Justin terug brengen of het gat dat hij achterlaat opvullen, maar het vervult ons met trots om te weten hoe goed iedereen over hem dacht en hoe geliefd hij was", vertelde Stefan Wilson.

"Ik probeer te doorgronden welke kwaliteiten van Justin hem zo speciaal maakte voor anderen en voor mij. Mijn definitie van een winnaar is daarbij helemaal veranderd. Ik dacht dat een winnaar alles deed om te winnen, zelfs af en toe de regels met een korreltje zout nemen. Ik realiseer me nu dat het dan niet draait om winnen, maar om de vruchten die van winst te plukken zijn."

"Een echte winnaar behoudt zijn integriteit en wil zichzelf eerlijk meten met zijn tegenstanders. Alleen dan weet je dat wanneer je wint, je op die dag ook echt de beste was. Justin belichaamde die integriteit en die insteek. Iets meer dan een week geleden hield ik zijn hand vast en bad voor een wonder, dat niet kwam. Vandaag sta ik voor jullie en daag ik een ieder uit. Welke lessen kunnen we leren van Justin?"
